Basic Tests For Checking Heart Health Before Starting Gym/ Exercise

1. Blood Pressure: We consider blood pressure as normal when it is between 120/80.   It is considered elevated when it is between 120 - 129/80. Whereas when it is between 130-139/80-89 then it comes under stage 1 which counts as hypertension. You are supposed to make some lifestyle changes and modifications to your diet. When blood pressure is more than or equal to 140/90 then you are required to make some changes to your lifestyle, and diet and have to take medicines too. To measure blood pressure, 2 readings are taken in different time frames. If each time results are high then it is called a case of hypertension.

2. Blood Sugar: This test tells whether a person is diabetic or whether there is any risk of being diabetic in the future. There are two tests:

Fasting Blood Sugar Test

The condition of the patient is considered normal when the result is <100 mg/dl, prediabetic when the result is 100-125 mg/dl, and diabetic when the result is equal to or more than 126 mg/dl 

HbA1c Test:

This test shows that when sugar level increases in the body it eventually gets attached to the level of haemoglobin. This test speaks about the average sugar level for 2-3 months. If HbA1c is less than 5.6% then the patient comes under the normal range. If HbA1c is 5.7% - 6.4% then the patient is considered prediabetic. If results are more than 6.5% then the patient is considered diabetic.

3. Lipid Profile Test: In this test, you are supposed to do overnight fasting and then give your blood sample in the morning. Then the doctor checks the patient's level for VLDL which should be less than 30 mg/dl, HDL which should be, for females more than 50 mg/dl and for males more than 40 mg/dl, Triglyceride which should be less than 150 mg/dl and Total Cholesterol which should be less than 200 mg/dl. 

4. HsCRP: Consider this test as it describes vascular inflammation. If the inflammation level is higher in your body then it damages the blood vessels and also increases the risk of heart attack and stroke. If the HsCrp level is <1 mg/lit then the patient comes under low risk. If results are between 1-3 mg/lit then the patient comes under moderate risk. If results are more than 3 mg/lit then there is a high risk.

5. Complete Blood Count (CBC) Test: This test checks the total oxygen-carrying capacity of haemoglobin in the body. Haemoglobin is responsible for taking oxygen to every other part of the body.  This overall checks the haemoglobin level to mark it as good normal or low. So baseline CBC test is a must. 

6. Kidney Function Test and Liver Function Test: Kidney and Liver are very important organs of your body. This test is a must as it helps to check if organs are functioning normally or not. The kidney and Liver help the body to maintain a good metabolism, Blood Pressure, Fluid balance, and Cholesterol level.

7. ECG: This test helps to see the status of electrical activity in your body. This ensures that the heart rate is normal, and rhythm is working in a regular flow or is irregular. 

8. 2DEchocardiography: In this, doctors check whether the heart's pumping capacity is normal, and heart valves are normal, it also checks if there's no hole in the heart, no congenital anomaly, and heart muscles are normal.
